Who i am.
Tristeza K Duncan also known as “TK” is a public speaker and Mental Health Advocate based in the Washington DC Metro area. Tristeza loves to build and connect communities, share ideas, and grow as a person and leader. She is currently a Board Director for NAMI Prince George's County. Tristeza received her Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration. She has spent over 10 years working in corporate environments in the Human Resources, Information Technology, and Project Management departments. Tristeza enjoys art, music, and using her talents to focus on her passions.
Tristeza was diagnosed with Type 2 Bipolar Disorder when she was 28 and General Anxiety Disorder when she was 36. She had problems with depression all through her 20s, but when she got help through her jobs EAP, she received the correct diagnosis. The next battle was getting the correct medicines. This took a lot of trial and error, but she finally found the right balance for her. Although, this is a ever going cycle that is managed.
Having the correct diagnosis, correct treatments, and a great support system has been critical in her recovery. She has been able to have a successful career, great friends and family, and live a full life. It still takes work, but she has the strength to push through.
Now that she is in recovery it is very important for her to give back to my community. This is where her work with NAMI Prince George’s County comes in. She found out about NAMI when she spoke at a Mental Health event hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. She immediately felt a connection to the organization. She says “Their mission and commitment to mental illness is wonderful to be a part of”. Their programs that range from Peer to Peer classes and Family Classes are a necessity in the community of Prince George’s County. She especially loves advocating for Mental Illness and Health issues to her State and US leaders. It is her mission to end the stigma on Mental Illness.
